A Unified Topic-Style Model for Online Discussions

چکیده
Forums have become major places for online communications for many years, where people often share and express opinions. We observe that, when editing posts, while some people seriously state their opinions, there are also many people playing jokes and writing meaningless posts on the discussed topics. We design a unified probabilistic graphical model to capture both topic-driven words and styledriven words. The model can help us separate serious and unserious posts/users and identify slang words. An extensive set of experiments demonstrates the effectiveness of our model.

A Factored Neural Network Model for Characterizing Online Discussions in Vector Space
We develop a novel factored neural model that learns comment embeddings in an unsupervised way leveraging the structure of distributional context in online discussion forums. The model links different context with related language factors in the embedding space, providing a way to interpret the factored embeddings. Evaluated on a community endorsement prediction task using a large collection of...
متن کاملCharacterizing the Language of Online Communities and its Relation to Community Reception
This work investigates style and topic aspects of language in online communities: looking at both utility as an identifier of the community and correlation with community reception of content. Style is characterized using a hybrid word and part-of-speech tag n-gram language model, while topic is represented using Latent Dirichlet Allocation. Experiments with several Reddit forums show that styl...
متن کاملEffects of Receiving Corrective Feedback through Online Chats and Class Discussions on Iranian EFL Learners' Writing Quality
Giving corrective feedback (CF) is an essential part of the teaching and learning process, and the way it should beneficially be done has been the focus of attention for numerous researchers especially when traditional ways of CF provision are not possible, particularly in rare situations such as outbreaks of diseases. This study investigated how different ways of giving feedback; namely, throu...
متن کاملLinguistic Style Accommodation in Disagreements
We investigate style accommodation in online discussions, in particular its interplay with content agreement and disagreement. Using a new model for measuring style accommodation, we find that speakers coordinate on style more noticeably if they disagree than if they agree, especially if they want to establish rapport and possibly persuade their interlocutors.
متن کاملBack up your Stance: Recognizing Arguments in Online Discussions
In online discussions, users often back up their stance with arguments. Their arguments are often vague, implicit, and poorly worded, yet they provide valuable insights into reasons underpinning users’ opinions. In this paper, we make a first step towards argument-based opinion mining from online discussions and introduce a new task of argument recognition. We match usercreated comments to a se...
